Georg Simmel’s theory of culture: the construction of the notions of man-individual and masculine monopoly of relational

ABSTRACT

The writings of Georg Simmel, one of the authors of the sociological canon, have been revisited by more contemporary studies of gender and feminist theory on what has been referred to as the woman question, the problem of the sexes and the possibility of a female culture. Within this theme, the objective of this article is to go through the author's argumentative construction about the incommensurability between the sexes, realizing how this argumentation is used to define as masculine the social domain itself. We start from a description of Simmel's theory of culture in order to introduce the contradictions between this theoretical framework and its characterization of the feminine. Secondly, we follow the construction of the incommensurability argument between the sexes, to then point out the characteristics that the author attributes to the masculine and feminine, with emphasis on the category of “relational”. Finally, we draw conclusions about the relationship between these characteristics and the notions of modernity and the social, defending the idea that, by giving the feminine an intrinsically non-relational character, the author contributed to the construction of a conception of the individual as a man and social while male.
