Call for Papers for the special issue “Imperial Brazil in Global Perspective” (2027)

The dossier “Imperial Brazil in a Global Perspective” brings together articles that analyze the political, economic, social, and cultural processes that took place during the Empire of Brazil (1822–1889) by examining their situational or systemic relationships with other parts of the world. It operates on the premise that central phenomena of the imperial experience - such as the organization of the State, the position of the Brazilian economy within the capitalist world-economy, the redefinition of labor regimes, the social and political role of the Catholic Church, the development of the legal framework, and various cultural developments - cannot be fully understood without acknowledging their connections to the events, processes, institutional models, and transnational flows that spanned the nineteenth century. Accordingly, the objective of this dossier is to encourage interpretations that, without overlooking the significance of internal dynamics, highlight the international dimensions of these processes. It emphasizes the circulation of ideas, agents, and practices that connected Brazil to other regions across the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Asia.
