La teoría humoral y su relación con el cultivo del tabaco por Inglaterra (Siglo XVII)

En Inglaterra, el tabaco era una sustancia relativamente nueva que solo ganaría popularidad en los últimos años del siglo XVI. A pesar del fracaso de Roanoke en 1587, los ingleses regresaron a Virginia en 1607. Se depositaron grandes expectativas en la colonia, encargada de producir bienes característicos de las Américas para ayudar a Inglaterra a reducir sus importaciones procedentes de la península ibérica. El tabaco pronto se convirtió en el principal cultivo de la colonia, profundamente ligado a Inglaterra en el siglo XVII, lo que dio lugar a numerosos debates. Preocupadas por el bienestar público, las autoridades médicas que abogaban por el uso del tabaco dejaron constancia de técnicas de cultivo adecuadas para garantizar las propiedades medicinales de la planta. En este artículo, proponemos un análisis de estas técnicas y su relación con la teoría humoral, considerando también su conexión con Virginia.
