Teoria humoral e sua associação com o cultivo de tabaco pela Inglaterra (Séc. XVII)

Resumo

O tabaco, na Inglaterra, foi um intoxicante cujo consumo começou a despontar sobretudo a partir do final do século XVI. Apesar das tentativas de colonização de Roanoke em 1587, os ingleses voltaram à Virgínia apenas em 1607. As expectativas eram altas para a colônia, incumbida de produzir mercadorias típicas das Américas, a fim de que a Inglaterra reduzisse suas importações da Península Ibérica. O tabaco logo se tornou o principal cultivo da colônia, sendo profundamente associado à Inglaterra seiscentista, o que provocou uma proliferação de debates em torno dele. Preocupadas com o bem-estar público, as autoridades medicinais que defendiam o uso do tabaco forneceram informações sobre técnicas de plantio adequadas para preservar as propriedades medicinais da erva. Propomos, neste artigo, a análise dessas técnicas e de sua associação à teoria humoral, sem perder de vista a relação com a Virgínia.
