What is at Stake? A Theoretical Analysis of Civil Society, Participation, and Democratic Effects

There is a long trajectory in political science that defends the positive effects that participation imputes under democracy. However, the recent rise of the extreme right and the support for authoritarian regimes has highlighted the heterogeneous nature of civil society, which includes some negative aspects. Although research has made progress in exploring the possible effects of participation on the state and public policies, the study of the formative role of participation in relation to its participants is still underdeveloped. Therefore, this article proposes a theoretical and analytical review of the different perspectives on the impact of participation on the formation of individuals in relation to the defense of democracy. The article analyzes classic concepts such as political culture, social capital, and participation, and aims to: (i) integrate two theoretical fields of political science (political and participationist culture) that share the same object but have distinct and rarely articulated perspectives, and (ii) examine the main criticisms and approaches that demonstrate that participation is not exclusively a virtuous field. The objective of the study is to shed light on the classic perspectives that support the positive relationship between participation and democracy, as well as to demonstrate the variations that exist within civil society itself and the democratic effects on individuals who participate.
