In this article, we analyze a Nazi propaganda poster that produces an interpretive gesture regarding the section of the Hitler Youth dedicated to girls. This section was known as the Bund Deutscher Mädel (League of German Girls). The poster was designed by an artist affiliated with the Third Reich’s Ministry of Propaganda, led by Joseph Goebbels. To conduct our reading of the poster, we employ the theoretical framework of Discourse Analysis, as developed by Michel Pêcheux in France and reinterpreted by Eni Orlandi and Freda Indursky in Brazil. Through this interpretive approach, we seek to understand how the discursive materiality—that is, the poster—functions discursively and produces meanings about the public and private roles of women in Nazi Germany. Thus, the analysis allows us to grasp how meanings are produced in their constitutive relationship with a network of memory that emerges in discourses signifying the body, sexuality, and the social role of women within the Nazi regime.
