Adversative nexes and punctuation

The present study aimed to investigate the syntactic and semantic motivations for the use of certain punctuation patterns related to the adversative nexus in academic works. To this end, we based this paper on studies by Givón (1984; 1991; 1993; 1995; 2012) who discusses about the dependencies of semantic-pragmatic aspect (functional dependence) and grammatical aspect (formal dependency), evaluating the use of punctuation regarding their efficiency, by graphically representing the different levels of connectivity, building an appropriate textual progression. In addition to the syntactic and semantic-pragmatic motivations, the difference in status that the adversative connectors porém, contudo, entretanto, no entanto e todavia have, given their adverbial aspect, in relation to the conjunction but proved to be relevant.
