Korean-Portuguese-English esports parallel corpus

Abstract

This study aims to explore a Korean-Portuguese-English parallel corpus focusing on the esports domain, specifically the electronic game entitled “League of Legends”. The corpus was compiled from official game documentation and transcriptions of professional players' speeches in the Korean league during official matches and online broadcasts, to include both the official language present in game files and the language authentically used by the gaming community. For the collection of data in Korean and its translation into English, translation into Portuguese was performed by us. The corpus structure allows for translational and comparative studies between the languages, as it is divided into three subcorpora that reflect the use of language in different contexts. Similarities were found in the terminology used across the three languages, often derived from their English origins. The results also show noticeable variation was also observed between the official designation of terms listed in the game documentation and the usage of these terms by the Korean professional gaming community.
