Technological spaces for language studies - focus on Sketch Engine

Abstract

This article reports on research that assessed the Sketch Engine digital platform (PSKE) with regard to its distinctive features in comparison with similar tools. It also examines the platform’s functionalities and extensions for application in language studies and the development of bilingual dictionaries. The methodology was investigative and descriptive, adopting a qualitative approach that combined a literature review with practical exploration of PSKE to demonstrate its use in authentic contexts. The aim of this paper is to present the main characteristics that distinguish PSKE from other platforms and to describe its resources, with particular emphasis on the Parallel Concordance tool and its applicability to bilingual studies focused on translation and lexicography. The theoretical framework is grounded in the principles and concepts of Corpus Linguistics, General Lexicography, and Digital Lexicography. Given the rapid advancement of computational models, promoting knowledge of PSKE in Brazilian Portuguese is essential to expand its potential in corpus-based linguistic studies.
