The present study aims to analyze how toponymic signs in Libras participate in the construction of territorial representations and regional identities, focusing on the naming criteria mobilized in the attribution of signs to municipalities in Alagoas located along the course of the São Francisco River. The studies of Dick (1990; 1992), Faria-Nascimento (2009), Langacker (1987; 2008), Sousa (2019; 2022), among others, contributed to the theoretical framework of this study. In view of this, based on a qualitative and descriptive research approach, 4 (four) deaf people were interviewed, residing in or native to municipalities in Alagoas crossed by the course of the São Francisco River, following the criteria established in the Libras Toponymic Atlas Project of Brazil (ATLIB) (Sousa, 2026). The results showed that the toponymic signs, demonstrated by the deaf participants, contribute to the construction of territorial representations and regional identities by incorporating elements of the fluvial landscape, especially the course of the São Francisco River, institutionalized references, local historical aspects, sociocultural practices, and influences arising from contact with the Portuguese language. In this sense, it is understood that the river influences the naming criteria, particularly in cases in which the fluvial landscape emerges as the most salient element, as in Belo Monte, Penedo, and Traipu.
