This paper interprets a brief quote Nietzsche makes from Meister Eckhart's Sermon 52, where the radical nature of the Rhenish mystic's doctrine of poverty and detachment reaches heterodox expressions. For Eckhart, the essence of freedom is not determined by a will or the exercise of human free will, but rather concerns the very nature of the human being and the possibility of always returning to the depths of original indistinction. First, it exposes Nietzsche's critique of Christianity and how he safeguards its primitive and original meaning as beatitude. Next, it seeks to outline the general lines of Eckhartian thought and the context of the quote Nietzsche quotes. Finally, it seeks to consider how Eckhartian quotes relate to Nietzschean thought, especially regarding the experience of freedom and the divine that give rise to a transformation of humanity itself and the meaning of all things, including God.
