Environmental characterization in the context of sand extraction in a locality of the municipality of Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brazil

Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the environmental conditions and a description of the geological, geomorphological, and pedological aspects of a sand extraction area located in the municipality of Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brazil. Its main objective is to evaluate the current environmental conditions associated with sand extraction activities in the area. The methodological approach integrated office-based analyses, including the preparation of thematic maps using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and a review of relevant literature. Field analyses consisted of the identification and macroscopic evaluation of geological, geomorphological, pedological, and environmental characteristics through the description of materials and site features, using geological hammers, hand lenses, and a Brunton compass to assess environmental impacts. A topographic survey was conducted using a total station, and the methodology adopted to calculate the volume of extracted mineral material was based on ABNT Standard NBR 13133/94. The results revealed environmental issues related to sand and clay extraction activities, indicating the need for erosion control measures and containment structures to mitigate the significant environmental impacts associated with clay extraction. Finally, the adoption of vegetative buffer zones and the installation of monitoring wells were recommended to control extraction depth and prevent damage to local soil resources.

Author Biography

  • Luiza Leonardi Bricalli, Federal University of Espírito Santo

    Holds a Ph.D. in Geology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), including a Doctoral Sandwich Program at the University of Rome (Italy), and a Master's degree in Geomorphology from the University of São Paulo (USP). She is a Professor at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), where she is engaged in teaching, research, and extension activities, conducting studies in the fields of Geology, Tectonics, Neotectonics, Seismology, Geomorphology, Climate Change, Remote Sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Her scientific production focuses on the analysis of the influence of geological structures and lineaments on landscape evolution, tectonic dynamics, mass movements, and seismicity, applying geotechnologies, near-surface geophysics, and remote sensing. In recent years, she has published articles in national and international journals on lineament patterns, structural and neotectonic control of landforms, geophysical characterization of granitic massifs using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and the relationship between geological structures and mass movements in the state of Espírito Santo. She is the author of the book chapter "University Extension in Geosciences: LANESI's Contribution to Graduate Studies at UFES," published in 2025, and has another book chapter, also dedicated to the activities and contributions of LANESI, accepted for publication by the Publishing House of the Office of the Vice President for Extension (PROEX/UFES), with publication scheduled for later this year. She is currently conducting research on seismicity in the state of Espírito Santo, including an article under publication on the inventory of earthquakes recorded in the state, as well as co-authoring a study on the relationship between earthquakes and geological lineaments in the Pancas region (Espírito Santo, Brazil). She is fluent in Italian and has an intermediate level of English for reading and conversation.
