ABSTRACT

The objective of this article is to test the hypotheses of positive selection of the migrants for the case studied. The main data source used consists of the microdata of the Demographic Census 2010. The logistic regression model is used to test the selectivity of the migrants. The main results show an increasing odds ratio increasing as the age increases, with OR of 11.45 (CI = 3.62-36.24) for intermunicipal migrants from RMGV of 65 years and over when compared to the reference category (15-19 years) and that the interstate migrants to the RMGV tend to be female, more educated and earn higher incomes. On the other hand, the interstate migrants, with respect to the rest of the population, tend to have scholarity more elevated and to be of black or brown race/color; For the variables age and income there was no association. Thus, migration has become an important element for the destination region with an increase in income on the state and metropolitan scales, with the arrival of more skilled and experienced workers. However, the attraction of older migrants coupled with shifts in demographic behavior and urban transition present major challenges, especially for public policies relating to health, welfare and the labor market.
