Support for perinatal grief: proposal for an outreach project

The loss of a baby during pregnancy, during childbirth or after birth is a remarkable and painful experience for families. This experience is often worsened by the lack of preparation of health teams and institutions whose procedures, words, or guidance do not contribute to a healthy grieving process. This article presents a proposal for an extension project that can be incorporated into Brazilian hospitals and maternity wards in order to train health teams and direct institutions towards the topic. Based on a review of the literature on the topic, it presents three dimensions that could be incorporated by health teams and institutions: 1. Training and qualification of health teams; 2. Organizational/structural changes in institutions; 3. Implementation of strategies for communicating difficult news and embracing perinatal grief.
