Physical therapist’s role and service organization in a Multiprofessional Health Residency Program

Introduction: The Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), one of the largest and most complex public health systems in the world, ensures universal access to healthcare. The Multiprofessional Health Residency Program (MHRP) was created as a strategy to enhance professional training aligned with the principles and guidelines of SUS. Objectives: To describe the challenges and experiences of the physical therapist acting as a preceptor in a MHRP focused on Urgency and Emergency in intensive care. Methods: This is a qualitative, narrative, and exploratory-descriptive study developed within a MHRP between January 2022 and August 2023. The report was structured based on observations from physical therapist preceptors and divided into four phases: service planning and organization; evidence-based clinical discussions; evaluation process; and challenges encountered during the preceptorship. Results: The main challenges reported were related to limited time for planning and welcoming new residents, difficulties in developing and implementing proposed activities, lack of adequate financial incentives for preceptors, and insufficient opportunities for continuing education. Conclusion: Systematizing the experience of the preceptors enabled the identification of key weaknesses in the organization and development of the program, notably the lack of designated workload, absence of financial incentives, and limited pedagogical training. Recognizing these challenges may support the development of strategies aimed at improving teaching practices and the overall quality of MHRPs.
