Abstract

Introduction: Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) are chronic and idiopathic diseases that involve an inflammatory process in the gastrointestinal tract, with periods of exacerbation and remission. They include Crohn's Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). In pediatrics, they present with initial symptoms of greater severity and extent. In recent years, there has been an increase in incidence among younger children and, despite the early onset, most are diagnosed at later stages. The objective of this study is to present a series of cases of children and adolescents with IBD, admitted in 2023 to the pediatric ward of a university hospital in Espírito Santo. Six patients were selected, 3 females and 3 males, 2 diagnosed with UC, 3 with CD, and 1 with very early onset IBD. Ages ranged from 10 months to 16 years. Discussion: Given the increased incidence of IBD in the pediatric age group, its more severe presentation in childhood and its chronic evolution, early diagnosis becomes essential, but due to the different forms of clinical presentation, difficulties in making an adequate diagnosis may occur. Conclusion: The description of the particularities of each clinical case presented in this work can contribute to the development of more effective actions related to the comprehensive care of children with IBD. This includes promoting early diagnosis and implementing rapid and effective interventions, minimizing the impact on the quality of life of patients and their families.
