Hospital admissions by conditions sensitive to primary attention on elderly people at Espírito Santo, Brazil, 2010-2015

Introduction: Population aging occurs increasingly and expenditures on hospital admissions in the elderly represent a great cost in public expenditures for hospital admissions with this part of the population. Some of the hospitalizations in the elderly can be avoided with effective actions of promotion and prevention in primary health care. Objectives: To describe as main causes of hospital admissions for critical conditions to Primary Care in elderly people in the health regions of Espírito Santo (ES). Methods: This is a descriptive study of the hospitalizations due to conditions sensitive to primary care of the population aged 60 years or older living in ES, occurring in the period from 2010 to 2015. Results: The proportion of hospital admissions due to conditions sensitive to primary care in the ES were higher due to diabetes mellitus (23.51%), pneumonia (18.95%), heart failure (11.04%), tubulo-interstitial (2.75%) renal diseases and diarrhea and gastroenteritis of origin infective (2.21%). Conclusion: Primary care is the main gateway for the elderly and must act in the promotion of health, prevention and control of diseases, in order to intervene in the proportions of these hospitalizations that could be avoided.
