Is Facebook good for the health of the overall population? The “MORE PARTICIPATION THE BETTER THE HEALTH” case in Portugal
Abstract
Introduction: We have witnessed the emergence of new forms of collective action over the last decade; it is the consequence of the boost communication technologies have given to collective mobilizations. Objective: Presenting the action-research project “MORE PARTICIPATION, THE BETTER THE HEALTH “ (MPms), which is a social movement focused on the healthcare field. This movement demonstrates how the use of internet by this technology has turned it into a paradigmatic case of virtual health activism. Methods: Analysis on how the preferential use of Internet and social networks – Facebook, in particular - and online contact can change participation reality in the Portuguese healthcare field based on characterizing the MPms project and on its participatory and network dynamics. Results: The aim of MPms since the very beginning was to implement a strong virtual presence by consolidating the social basis to support its goals and by outspreading ideas and initiatives, and by strategically launching debates and questions to its target audience. This virtual activism has contributed to the awareness of the public importance of citizens’ participation in decision-making about healthcare issues and to reinforce their regular involvement in healthcare discussions in order to accomplish future transformative participation in healthcare systems. Conclusion: Net-activism is a fundamental leverage for mobilization, collective action and public awareness in the healthcare field.
