Introduction:
The aging process causes structural and functional changes, which make the elderly more vulnerable to certain injuries and diseases. Objectives: Verify the self-assessment of health status and degree of dependence for basic activities of daily living in quilombola elderly. Methods: This is a crosssectional descriptive study, consisting of elderly people registered in the Quilombola community association of Caiana dos Crioulos, in Alagoa Grande/PB, Brazil. The variables evaluated were: sociodemographic profile, self-assessment of health status, and degree of dependence for basic activities of daily living (BADL). This study is part of a larger study approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the State University of Paraíba (Opinion number 3.459.657). Results: Forty seven elderly people were assessed. There was a higher proportion of elderly women (68,1%), 60 to 70 years old (53,2%), with a partner (57,4%), with 3 or more residents at home (42,6%), with regular self-rated health (48,9%), independence to perform BADL (95,7%). Among the elderly independent to perform BADL, 46,7% considered their health as regular. The results show a higher prevalence of regular self-assessment of health status and independence to perform basic activities of daily living among the elderly studied. The result is similar to other studies carried out with the elderly. Conclusion: These findings show the relevance of know ledge, by health professionals, family members and the elderly, of the factors that impact the self-assessment of the health status of the elderly, as well as functional capacity.
