Obstructive acute abdomen due to intestinal malrotation in an elderly patient: LADD procedure

Introduction:
Intestinal malrotation is the total or partial failure of the rotation of the primitive intestine during embryogenesis, with 90% of cases being diagnosed in children under 1 year of age. The incidence in adults is estimated to be 0.2% and it can present as acute obstructive abdomen or as a chronic condition with recurrent nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms, including colicky abdominal pain, episodes of abdominal distension, early satiety, among others. Objective: This case report aims to discuss the importance of differential diagnoses of acute obstructive abdomen in elderly patients. Case report: Therefore, an infrequent clinical case in the general surgeon’s medical practice was approached, intestinal malrotation in an adult patient. Conclusion: It was observed that by applying the surgical method of choice as described in the medical literature, a good postoperative outcome was observed with the possibility of early medical discharge.
