Census of physical disabilities caused by leprosy during and after drug discharge in state of São Paulo, Brazil

Introduction: The prevention, monitoring and treatment of physical disabilities caused by leprosy is a challenge for endemic countries. Objective: The objective was to verify the prevalence and describe the physical disabilities caused by leprosy in the eyes, nose, hands and feet through the Census of Disabilities of the State of São Paulo (CIESP) of 67 municipalities in the years 2012 and 2015. Patients undergoing treatment were eligible and those with chemotherapy discharge. Methods: The forms were audited and then analyzed by EPI INFO 7.2. Results: Of the 724 forms evaluated, 456 (63%) had one to four physical deficiencies already installed in the eyes, nose, hands and feet. The most affected segments were feet 265 (36.6%) followed by hands 163 (22.5%), eyes 110 (15.2%) and nose 45 (6.2%). The occurrence of disabilities was found in 91.1% (51/56) municipalities and the average was four cases per municipality (minimum 1 and maximum 7). Conclusion: Despite being a region of low endemicity, six out of ten individuals have physical disabilities in different body segments with a variety of conditions. It is concluded that a serious problem must be addressed by managers, health professionals and the population.
