Analysis of fluoride content in public water supply in the municipality of Cascavel, Paraná

Introduction: The effectiveness of water fluoridation is related to maintaining optimal fluoride levels to obtain maximum benefit in caries control with the lowest risk of dental fluorosis. Objectives: To report the concentration of fluoride in the public water supply of the municipality of Cascavel, using the principles of heterocontrol. Methods: To identify sampling points for water collection, the Sampling Guide prepared by the Ministry of Health's Collaborating Center for Oral Health Surveillance (CECOL) was used. Monthly samples were collected in 06 Basic Health Units, always in the last week of the month, from 05/2022 to 04/2023. The samples were analyzed using the electrometric method at the Central State Laboratory (LACEN), Foz de Iguaçu/PR Unit. Results: 72 samples were analyzed, ranging from 0.51 to 1.13 mg/L with an average of 0.745 mg/L. According to the criteria established by the Ministry of Health's Collaborating Center for Oral Health Surveillance, 80.6% of the samples had adequate fluoride levels, 6.9% had fluoride concentrations above the ideal, and 12.5% below the ideal. Conclusion: Compared with data from a previous study conducted in the city, an improvement in the fluoridation conditions of the water supply was observed four years after the implementation of external control. Continuous monitoring of the fluoridation of the water supply is essential for controlling tooth decay and dental fluorosis.
