Introduction: Stroke is an important cause of morbidity and mortality, with a consequent reduction in quality of life. Its prevalence has been increasing in young adults, which generates enormous socioeconomic impact and reinforces the importance of etiological investigation. Objectives: This study aims to review the main risk factors that are associated with stroke in young adult.; Methods: Literature review based on PUBMED, using the terms "stroke AND young adults AND risk factors". Results: The prevalence of risk factors varies according to age, sex and geographic location. In addition to traditional risk factors (smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, among others), there are other factors, known as non-traditional, that play a role in the increase in the incidence of stroke, such as migraine, use of recreational drugs and pregnancy. Conclusion: It is important to identify the main risk factors related to stroke in young people to enable appropriate primary and secondary prevention strategies to be devised.
