The institucional void in schools in the face of sexual harassment cases

The article analyzes the perception of victims of school sexual harassment regarding the lack of preparation of educatio- nal institutions to receive and deal with complaints. The data for analysis were obtained through semi-structured interviews with adults who, while attending primary or secondary school, suffered sexual harassment by a member of the school community. To ful- fill this intention, it initially presents important characteristics that integrate the victims’ educational trajectories and then discusses the notion of institutional void. The idea of institutional void indi- cates the absence of spaces and institutional mechanisms within schools to receive and deal with reports of sexual harassment. In conclusion, it proposes the development of sexual education in schools as a possible way to combat this harmful practice in en- vironments that must prioritize the respect of the students’ rights.
