Resumo

Traditionally, the palato-alveolar consonants most widely treated in analyses of the phonology of Brazilian Portuguese are the affricates, regarded as allophones of the apical stop phonemes when followed by /i/. In this paper, we will take into account also the nasal and lateral palato-alveolars and will raise some questions regarding the status of the palato-alveolars in sociolets of the illiterate.
