The disposal of expired or non-expired medication is a concern for public health, as it can cause damage to the environment and generate emerging contaminants, and for this reason, it cannot have the same final destination as common waste. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the knowledge of the population regarding the disposal of medicines at home and address the possible impacts caused by the incorrect disposal of medicines. This is a systematic literature review, whose data collection was carried out between November and December 2020, covering the studies exposed in the SciElo and PubMed databases. There were 3285 information bulletins in the databases from predefined descriptors. Through exploratory reading, 10 studies were selected to be carried out in full, which were included in the research. It is concluded that regardless of the location in the world, awareness about drug disposal is low, because even knowing that it can become a toxic agent for the environment, a population performs incorrect disposal because they do not have enough information on how to do it. the correct destination.
