Abstract:This study aims to analyze the use of the Portuguese language by Timorese students at the National University of Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL), highlighting linguistic difficulties and the influence of Tetum on the learning process. The research, of a qualitative and exploratory nature, was conducted based on questionnaires applied to five students. The results show that Tetum interferes in speaking and writing in Portuguese, generating phenomena of functional bilingualism and linguistic hybridity. The main difficulties observed involve pronunciation, vocabulary, verb tenses, agreement, and text organization. It is concluded that understanding the multilingual context of Timor-Leste is essential to improve the teaching and learning of Portuguese as a second language.
