Evaluation of vaginal delivery care at a public maternity hospital in Northeast Brazil

Introduction: Maternal mortality is a topic of discussion at the national and international levels, due to the negative repercussions on the lives of families. Objective: To analyze the assistance to the vaginal delivery in the reference hospital of the city of Vitória de Santo Antão, according to the humanized good practices recommended by the World Health Organization and the Bologna index. Methods: A descriptive, transversal and quantitative study conducted with 266 mothers in rooming a state hospital in Vitória de Santo Antão (PE), Brazil, from December 2015 to March 2016, through a questionnaire and medical record. Results: (23.8 ± 6.2) was the average age, 78.9% of pregnant women received prenatal consultations and 47.4% were not informed of the guidelines on the labor and vaginal delivery. Effective practices were highlighted in childbirth care: accompanying the presence (99.2%); respect for privacy (95.5%); and auscultation of fetal heart rate (95.1%) and harmful practices: directed bearing down (94.7%); stimulus lithotomy position (78.1%) and routine use of synthetic oxytocin (77.9%). Conclusion: After the analysis provided, there were existing limitations in humanized care at delivery, and there is a need for reflection and transformation of care in the delivery scenario.
