Abstract

Introduction: Breastfeeding and adequate and healthy complementary feeding are strategies that contribute to the promotion of children's health Objective: Assessing the knowledge of mothers or guardians of children younger than two years about breastfeeding and complementary feeding. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted with 138 mothers or guardians of children younger than two years treated in Basic Health Units, in São Luís City (MA). Semi-structured form was applied to collect socioeconomic and demographic data, as well as information on participants’ knowledge about breastfeeding and complementary feeding. The frequency of hits corresponding to each question and the frequency of interviewees based on their levels of knowledge about breastfeeding (poor, intermediate and good) and complementary feeding (poor, good and excellent) were evaluated. Chi-square test was used to evaluate association among variables. Results: Although 88.8% of interviewees presented good and intermediate knowledge about breastfeeding and 95.5% had good and excellent knowledge about complementary feeding, there was high frequency of participants who did not know about colostrum (67.9%) and about the appropriate artifacts used to feed children with expressed breast milk (63.4%). Good knowledge about breastfeeding prevailed among participants with 12-15 years of schooling (74.1%), whereas excellent knowledge about complementary feeding prevailed among participants in the age group 20-34 years (75.9%), as well as among participants with 12-15 years of schooling (75.9%) (p0<05). Conclusion: Lack of knowledge about important breastfeeding and complementary feeding aspects has emphasized the need of implementing continuous guidance on these issues in Primary Health Care routine, in order to promote child health.
