Preparation of materials for teaching and popularization of mycology

Introduction: Mycology, the science that studies fungi, is still addressed superficially at different levels of education in Brazil, from basic to higher education. This may limit understanding of the environmental, biotechnological, and medical importance of fungi and is compounded by the scarcity of didactic-pedagogical materials on the topic. Objective: To report the development of didactic-pedagogical materials for teaching and popularizing mycology. Methods: Long-lasting fungal cultures embedded in resin and three-dimensional prototypes of microscopic structures were produced, accompanied by a theoretical guide covering different fungal genera and species. Results: A total of 64 fungal cultures embedded in resin, 11 3D-printed prototypes, four lithophane plates, and a 28-page theoretical guide were produced. The materials were designed for use in basic, technical, and higher education and in outreach activities. Conclusion: The resources developed constitute durable and manipulable didactic prototypes with the potential to support the teaching of mycology. Further studies should validate the biosafety of the preserved cultures and evaluate their applicability, usability, and educational effectiveness in different audiences.
