Abstract

How is Sociology possible in the face of its growing internal differentiation? Guided by the General Theory of Social Systems (GTSS) and Heinz von Foerster’s cybernetic constructivism, this article answers this question, observing sociology as a form of self-description of modernity. Starting from the distinction between society and humanity, it examines the historical and contemporary crossroads of the discipline: the transformation of social problems into sociological problems under the modern attractor of progress; the asymmetries between North and South, Center and Periphery, in the production of knowledge; and the role of the inclusion/exclusion code, particularly its racial intersections, in the self-organization of science. It argues that the pluralization of perspectives – including decolonial theories and so-called "speaking place" – does not lead to the disintegration of Sociology but to an increase in its internal complexity, allowing it to integrate itself as a world system, dealing with a social environment whose temporalization of complexity is increasingly accelerated.
