This article discusses the debates raised by a decolonial agenda for algorithmic computing. Drawing on a review of the literature, we outline the distinctions between postcolonial theory and decolonial thought, suggesting that this distinction stems from the radicalization of the critique systematized by decolonial thinkers – with repercussions for their research agendas. We also situate these differences within the field of computing, contrasting postcolonial computing, focused on the cultural dimensions of technological design, with decolonial computing, centered on the relations between racism and technology. Within the context of decolonial computing, we present the taxonomy of decolonization of algorithmic coloniality proposed by Mohamed et al. (2020), described as 1) institutionalized algorithmic oppression; 2) algorithmic exploitation; and 3) algorithmic dispossession. We discuss the potential and limitations of decolonial thought for critical research in algorithmic computing, considering the regulatory and political challenges that cut across this research agenda.
