Author Guidelines

The Revista Sofia is permanently open to submissions. The journal does not charge any article processing fees or submission fees, nor for downloads or sharing, thus operating as a Diamond Open Access journal.

The Revista Sofia only publishes original and unpublished articles by professors and researchers holding master's or doctoral degrees – and which are not under evaluation for publication in another journal – subject to prior approval by reviewers and compliance with the journal's editorial standards. Texts by master's students will only be accepted in co-authorship with their advisor.

  • Texts may be written in Portuguese, English, Spanish, Italian, or German;

  • Articles, translations, and critical reviews will be accepted. The journal also publishes reprints of relevant works that are fundamental to the field of Philosophy, provided there is express authorization from the editor of the original publication. Questions may be sent to the email: revista.sofia.ufes@gmail.com.

  • Articles must be submitted electronically, in Word or RTF formats, following the system's steps designed to assist in the editing of scientific journals at each stage of the editorial process.

  • Publication of articles is subject to prior approval by the Journal's Editorial Committee, after which they will be submitted to peer review, conducted by at least two external reviewers. Author identification must be removed from the file, ensuring the journal's confidentiality criterion.

Final acceptance of articles depends on the following criteria:

  • Reviewers' recommendations;

  • Execution of necessary adjustments by the author(s);

  • Approval by the Editorial Committee, whose resolution will encompass six different evaluations:

    • Accept;

    • Mandatory corrections;

    • Resubmit for evaluation;

    • Send to another journal;

    • Reject;

    • See comments.

  • Before final publication of the article on the journal's website, the Managing Editor sends the already formatted and corrected article so that the author can give their final "ok".

Important: The Revista Sofia is not responsible for the concepts and opinions expressed by the authors.

  • Authors of articles published by the Revista Sofia retain the copyright of their works, licensing them under the Creative Commons Attribution CC BY license, which allows for the reuse and distribution of articles without restrictions, provided the original work is properly cited.

General Submission Guidelines

  • The Revista Sofia Template exemplifying article formatting can be found HERE

  • Length of Articles and Translations: Submissions must have a maximum of 25 pages, including references. Spacing should be 1.5.

  • Reviews: Submissions must have a maximum of 5 pages with 1.5 spacing.

  • Title: (in the original language and in English) must contain a maximum of 240 characters including spaces.

  • Interviews: Must include a minimum bibliography. This may include works by the interviewee and/or works about their work.

Citation and Reference Rules

  • Citations must follow ABNT standards. Citations of up to three lines within the text should be in double quotation marks, with single quotation marks to be used in cases of citations within citations. Citations with more than three lines should be indented by 4 cm from the left margin, single-spaced, and in Garamond font, size 11. Suppression of parts of the cited text should be indicated with ellipses in brackets, and comments in brackets. Italic highlights in the citation should be indicated, after the source indication, in parentheses, as "our emphasis" or "author's emphasis" (if already part of the referenced work).

  • Footnotes should be used for the purpose of supplementary information to the text, not for references, and should be in numerical sequence, in Garamond font, size 10. If a footnote is needed in the title, indicate it with an asterisk.

  • Bibliographic references must follow ABNT standards, preceded by the sentence "References," written in bold, and written from the second line below, without numbering, in alphabetical order of authors.

  • The sequence of elements of a reference should be: AUTHOR. Title. Edition. Place: Publisher, date. The author should be cited by surname, in uppercase, followed by a comma and the first name(s). In the case of three authors, cite all, separating them with semicolons. In the case of more authors, cite only the first, followed by the Latin expression "et al."

  • The title of the work should be in italics, starting with a capital letter and subsequent words in lowercase (except in cases of proper names or other works) and separated from any subtitles by a colon. The work, in summary, will be cited as follows:

  • Book chapters should follow the format:

CHAPTER AUTHOR. Chapter title. In: BOOK AUTHOR (Org.). Book title: subtitle. Edition. Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication. p. start-end pages of the chapter.

Example: OLIVEIRA, Maria de. Filosofia e ética. In: SILVA, José da (Org.). Introdução à filosofia: uma abordagem crítica. 3. ed. São Paulo: Editora Exemplo, 2020. p. 123-145.

  • Journal articles should follow the format:

AUTHOR. Article title. Journal name, Place of publication, v. volume, n. number, p. start-end pages, Abbreviated month. Year.

Example: PEREIRA, Ana Lúcia. A ética na filosofia contemporânea. Revista Brasileira de Filosofia, São Paulo, v. 45, n. 2, p. 200-215, abr./jun. 2021.

  • Dissertations and theses should follow the format:

AUTHOR. Title: subtitle. Year. Number of pages or volumes. Type of work (Degree and area of concentration) – Institution, Place, Year.

Example: MARTINS, João Paulo. A justiça como equidade em Rawls. 2022. 150 f. Dissertação (Mestrado em Filosofia) – Universidade Federal de São Paulo, São Paulo, 2022.

  • Conference papers should follow the format:

AUTHOR. Paper title. In: EVENT NAME, number., year, Place. Proceedings... Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication. p. start-end pages.

Example: FERREIRA, Carlos. Democracia e cidadania. In: CONGRESSO BRASILEIRO DE FILOSOFIA, 10., 2023, Recife. Anais... Recife: Editora Exemplo, 2023. p. 45-60.

  • Electronic documents should follow the format:

AUTHOR. Title: subtitle. Edition. Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication. Available at: electronic address. Accessed on: day month. year.

  • References with two authors should follow the format:

AUTHOR 1; AUTHOR 2. Book title: subtitle. Edition. Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication.

Example: SILVA, José da; PEREIRA, Ana Lúcia. Introdução à filosofia: uma abordagem crítica. 3. ed. São Paulo: Editora Exemplo, 2020.

  • References with three authors should follow the format:

  • References with more than three authors should follow the format:

Submission Format

The content of the originals must contain, in the following order:

  • Title of the text: Title in the language of the article and in English. Titles (in the language of the article and in English) must contain a maximum of 240 characters with spaces;

  • Abstracts: In the language of the article and in English, containing a maximum of 200 words and accompanied by at least three keywords;

  • Full text of the article: Formatted in Garamond, 12 pt, 1.5 spacing;

  • Images: (such as figures and graphs) should only be used when strictly necessary. They should be identified, numbered sequentially, and mentioned in the text at the location corresponding to their insertion. Scanned images must be sent separately, in individual files in .jpg, .png, or .tif formats, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.

  • Charts and tables: should only be used when essential, and also sent in files separate from the text. They must be identified, numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals, and referenced in the body of the text at the exact point of their insertion.

  • Citations: Citations within the text must follow the following standards:

    • One author: (Leipnitz, 1987);

    • Two authors: (Turner and Verhoogen, 1960);

    • Three or more authors: (Amaral et al., 1966);

    • Works by the same author(s) and same date must be distinguished by lowercase letters immediately after the date. Example: (Amaral, 2008a) (Amaral, 2008b). Do not use the expressions op. cit; ibid; ibidem; id; idem.

Presentation of Citations

  • Citations with fewer than three lines should be incorporated into the text in quotation marks;

  • Citations with more than three lines should be presented in a separate paragraph, with single spacing between lines, 11 pt font size, and indented 4 cm from the left margin of the text.

  • Footnotes: Footnotes should only be used when strictly necessary. Only explanatory footnotes are allowed. Footnotes containing only references are not permitted. These should be listed at the end of the text, in the "References" section. Reviews should not contain footnotes.

References

  • References must be typed in Garamond font, 12 pt, with single spacing between lines, and organized in alphabetical order.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  1. The contribution must be original and unpublished, and must not be under evaluation for publication by another journal; otherwise, this must be justified in "Comments to the editor."

  2. Contributions, whether articles, translations, or reviews, must deal with Philosophy or related areas, provided they present philosophical problems and approaches.

  3. Texts submitted in foreign languages must have their spelling and grammar reviewed by the author(s) themselves.

  4. Submission files must be in Microsoft Word or RTF format (following the Template provided by the Journal).

  5. The content of the originals must contain, in the following order: - Title of the text: Title in the language of the article and in English. Titles (in the language of the article and in English) must contain a maximum of 240 characters including spaces; - Abstracts: In the language of the article and in English, containing a maximum of 200 words and accompanied by at least three keywords; - Full text of the article: Formatted in Garamond, 12 pt, 1.5 spacing; - Images (such as figures and graphs): should only be used when strictly necessary.   6. A maximum of 25 pages must be observed for contributions, except for reviews, whose maximum number is five pages.

  7. The journal only publishes contributions from researchers holding a master's or doctoral degree or in co-authorship with researchers holding a master's or doctoral degree.

  8. It is the author's responsibility to inform the funding agency for funded works.

  9. Author identification must be removed from the file, ensuring the journal's confidentiality criterion in the case of submission for peer review (e.g., articles) and ensuring blind review.

  10. The text follows the style standards and bibliographic requirements described in the Guidelines for Authors, in the About the Journal section.

  11. It is recommended that authors who have already published in the Revista Sofia wait a two-year interval before submitting new works.

Copyright Notice

Given the journal's open access policy, the use of published texts is free of charge, with the obligation to acknowledge the original authorship and first publication in this journal. The authors of the published contributions are entirely and exclusively responsible for their content.

I. The authors authorize the publication of the article in this journal.
II. The authors guarantee that the contribution is original and assume full responsibility for its content in the event of third-party claims.
III. The authors guarantee that the contribution is not under evaluation by another journal.
IV. The authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication, with the work licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License.
V. The authors are authorized and encouraged to disseminate and distribute their work online after publication in the journal.
VI. The authors of approved works authorize the journal to distribute their content, after publication, for reproduction in content indexes, virtual libraries, and similar platforms.
VII. The editors reserve the right to make adjustments to the text and adapt the article to the journal's editorial standards.
