A filosofia política é marcada pela obra de Maquiavel e Hobbes. No limiar da modernidade, os dois pensadores foram os primeiros a refletir sobre as condições de formação dos Estados nacionais modernos. O primeiro, considerado por muitos o fundador da ciência política, descreve pela primeira vez em que consiste a especificidade da política, apartada de um modelo de moralidade religiosa. O segundo é o primeiro a elaborar a doutrina do contrato social para justificar as bases do pacto social que confere legitimação ao poder absolutista do monarca.
