This article presents the results of an undergraduate research project that investigated which digital teaching materials provided by the State Education Secretariats of the Brazilian Northeast address new literacies practices, especially multimodality, in English language teaching. This is a qualitative (Paiva, 2019) and interpretive (Moita Lopes, 2019) research, which also constitutes documentary research by investigating digital teaching materials in various media (PDF, audio, video, etc.). Regarding the theoretical framework underpinning the investigation, Author (2014; 2021) and Zacchi (2014) stand out in the context of discussions about new literacies. On multimodality, we cite Kress (2010), Jones and Hafner (2012), Façanha and Lucena (2020), and Monte Mór (2021). Upon beginning the cataloging of teaching materials, we observed that among the nine states of the Brazilian Northeast, only three do not provide digital teaching materials on their websites. As a result, it was observed that, among the Secretariats whose portals offered digital teaching materials for English language teaching, multimodality was underutilized. Although present through different choices of multimodal texts, its main role in the materials was to support the typographical text, ignoring the numerous possibilities for meaning-making that these texts could explore.
