Dossier Energy transition and extractive dependence — Latin America’s dilemmas in the era of critical minerals
In recent years, geopolitical tensions between the United States and China have grown over control of critical mineral supply chains, which are vital to the military industry, electronics, digitalization, and, especially, the so-called energy transition. For these nations, control of critical minerals is a crucial strategic element for security and independence. Since Latin America holds significant mineral reserves, the region has become a focal point of pressure and conflict over these resources. At the same time, mining these minerals can result in ecosystem destruction and threaten traditional ways of life. This dossier invites contributions that critically examine these processes and explore alternatives that go beyond conventional ideas of progress and development. We therefore welcome proposals that address these issues through specific case studies or comparative and theoretical analyses.
Dialogues of the South Atlantic: territorial complexity in the port–city interface and coastal regions
PROPOSAL: This thematic dossier focuses on the problems and challenges encountered by urban port areas and coastal, maritime, and fluvial cities. It approaches these issues through socio-territorial, geopolitical, and environmental dimensions, where multiple theoretical perspectives, disciplinary approaches, and problematics converge.
FORMAT: The dossier will be organized around three thematic axes and will feature invited specialists from across Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. In addition to these specific invitations, the dossier also aims to broaden the discussion by opening the call to scholars working on the South Atlantic, to update and connect ideas and knowledge. The dossier adheres to the journals’ editorial policies and maintains anonymous peer review. Submissions will be accepted in Spanish and Portuguese.
The dossier encourages contributions in the following formats:
- Academic articles;
- Brief Notes;
- Translations;
- Research Notes;
- Interviews;
- Reviews.
OBJECTIVE: To promote a transdisciplinary approach to complex urban, port, and marine or fluvial interface regions by updating perspectives, methods, and scales through the involvement of scholars from Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina.
