Author Guidelines

General recommendations for authors

  • Article template.
  • Authors must notify the Editor in a separate message whether any Artificial Intelligence was used in preparing the article and explain how it was used. This information should also be included as a note in the article’s methodology section.
  • Our journal is indexed on international platforms, including Web of Science, Redalyc, Open Edition, Dialnet, and Index Copernicus. We aim to disseminate knowledge and ensure it reaches the peer audience. Therefore, authors must, before submitting their articles for review, conduct a literature review in Geografares itself to determine whether the journal has already published relevant articles that should be cited. They must also review the literature on the platforms listed above, especially Web of Science.
  • The journal does not charge any fees for submitting or publishing articles.
  • The journal does not accept articles with more than five authors.
  • All articles, reviews, and research notes must be submitted without any reference to the authors in the body of the text or in the file name. Submissions that fail to comply with these rules will be rejected and must be revised before resubmission.
  • Articles by undergraduate students will not be accepted. We also do not accept work created for coursework.
  • Authors cannot publish more than one article in the journal every three years.
  • Plagiarism and self-plagiarism are strictly prohibited. Self-plagiarism involves changing only superficial aspects of a text already published elsewhere to republish it. Authors must check for possible plagiarism using the CopySpider software, available at http://www.copyspider.com.br/main/. The report confirming that the article has no similarity to other files must be submitted along with the article. If any similarity is found, the report must include a justification for editorial review.
  • In the author registration section, all authors must specify the research from which the article originates, whether partially or in its final form. They must also identify, on the registration page, the research group and/or laboratory associated with the research, whether it received funding, and if it stemmed from a master’s dissertation or a doctoral thesis. Articles that fail to comply with these requirements will be rejected.
  • Authors must sign a declaration stating that the article is original and unpublished, according to the required model. This declaration must be submitted along with the article at the time of submission. We do not accept articles that are substantially similar to previously published texts in journals, conference proceedings, or other publication formats. When there is more than one author, this declaration must also specify each author's individual contribution.
  • All authors must include their ORCID number in the designated field. ORCID is a nonprofit organization that helps researchers and innovators be uniquely identified and connected. To get an ORCID number, visit https://orcid.org/register. When submitting an article to Geografares, authors need to verify their ORCID on the journal’s website. Please copy and paste the ORCID number into the proper field to prevent typing mistakes. After submitting, coauthors listed on the publication will receive an ORCID verification link from the journal to complete the process.
  • All authors must complete their biography in the metadata. The biography should include details about their academic background, institutional affiliations, and research, whether completed or ongoing. Each author’s affiliation needs to specify the department, research center, and university, along with the institution’s address, city, state, and country.
  • Titles, abstracts, and keywords in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French must be entered in the appropriate fields and in the metadata at the time of submission.
  • All texts in English, Spanish, and French within the journal system and in the article itself must be reviewed by a professional proofreader. The article must be submitted with a simple signed statement from the proofreader and/or translator confirming that the text was properly revised. The journal may recommend proofreaders if requested. In such cases, please contact us through the institutional email address.
  • Titles must be written in sentence case, except for proper nouns and acronyms.
  • Keywords must also be written in sentence case, except for proper nouns and acronyms. They must serve as descriptors for the article’s problem, hypotheses, and conclusions. When applicable, they should also specify the geographic area covered by the article.
  • Figures, maps, photographs, graphs, and flowcharts inserted in the body of the text must also be submitted separately, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
  • Geografares is a geography journal that involves other disciplines, but its focus is on territorial and spatial questions. Articles must primarily analyze these categories. Articles from other fields that do not align with this scope will be rejected.
  • The normal review period for an article is up to four months, counted from receipt of the article to approval.
  • We accept articles in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French.

Dossier Energy transition and extractive dependence — Latin America’s dilemmas in the era of critical minerals

In recent years, geopolitical tensions between the United States and China have grown over control of critical mineral supply chains, which are vital to the military industry, electronics, digitalization, and, especially, the so-called energy transition. For these nations, control of critical minerals is a crucial strategic element for security and independence. Since Latin America holds significant mineral reserves, the region has become a focal point of pressure and conflict over these resources. At the same time, mining these minerals can result in ecosystem destruction and threaten traditional ways of life. This dossier invites contributions that critically examine these processes and explore alternatives that go beyond conventional ideas of progress and development. We therefore welcome proposals that address these issues through specific case studies or comparative and theoretical analyses.

Dialogues of the South Atlantic: territorial complexity in the port–city interface and coastal regions

PROPOSAL: This thematic dossier focuses on the problems and challenges encountered by urban port areas and coastal, maritime, and fluvial cities. It approaches these issues through socio-territorial, geopolitical, and environmental dimensions, where multiple theoretical perspectives, disciplinary approaches, and problematics converge.

FORMAT: The dossier will be organized around three thematic axes and will feature invited specialists from across Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. In addition to these specific invitations, the dossier also aims to broaden the discussion by opening the call to scholars working on the South Atlantic, to update and connect ideas and knowledge. The dossier adheres to the journals’ editorial policies and maintains anonymous peer review. Submissions will be accepted in Spanish and Portuguese.

The dossier encourages contributions in the following formats:

  • Academic articles;
  • Brief Notes;
  • Translations;
  • Research Notes;
  • Interviews;
  • Reviews.

OBJECTIVE: To promote a transdisciplinary approach to complex urban, port, and marine or fluvial interface regions by updating perspectives, methods, and scales through the involvement of scholars from Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina.
