Abstract

Changes in work in a sudden extreme context, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, is a topic that deserves attention in the field of
Organizational Studies. However, few previous studies have investigated meaningful work in this context, neglecting the activities
performed by health professionals. Thus, the objective of this article is to understand the meaningful work of physicians who
worked on the front lines during the pandemic. To this end, we adopted a qualitative approach and analyzed data collected in
seventeen interviews with Brazilian physicians who worked on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study arrived at two
analytical categories: idealized medical work and medical work during the pandemic. We showed that medical professionals
idealized their work based on the admiration of physicians' family members and its life-saving character, but the pandemic led
them to shift meaningful work to a role of caring for and comforting patients and their families.
