Abstract

Introduction: Experiencing violence in childhood has significant impacts on mental health, sleep, physical health, growth, development, and behavior. Objective: To identify, in the literature, primary studies that report the impacts of childhood violence on children’s growth and development through adolescence.
Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted using the MEDLINE, LILACS, BDENF, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, with no time restriction. Results: A total of 5,262 articles were initially found. After screening titles, abstracts, and full texts, 23 articles published between 2002 and 2022 were included, analyzing children and youth up to 22 years old. The studies were grouped into four thematic categories: impacts on mental health and socialization (39.0%), impacts on sleep (8.6%), impacts on physical health and growth (13.0%), and impacts on development and behavior (39.1%). Conclusion: This integrative review demonstrates that violence experienced during childhood has lasting negative effects, often resulting in irreversible harm to the victims. The findings underscore the need for qualified healthcare professionals to recognize early signs of violence, report cases, and implement preventive and interventional strategies.
