Etiological factors of molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH): integrative literature review

Abstract

Introduction: Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative change in enamel of systemic origin that involves 1 to 4 permanent first molars and can also affects permanent incisors. Objectives: To evaluate, in the literature, etiological factors associated with MIH. Methods: An integrative literature review was carried out based on research in Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, Lilacs and Scielo databases, between March and May 2020. Key-words “Dental enamel hypoplasia”, “Tooth Demineralization”, “Molar”, “Incisor” and “Etiology” were used. Inclusion criteria were: articles published in Portuguese, English or Spanish, indexed in selected databases and available for free, accessed via Portal de Periódicos Capes. All studies that were not related to the topic of interest and that were not primary studies were discarded. Results: Initially, a total of 673 publications were obtained, after careful evaluation, the final sample was 19 articles. Genetic influence, environmental conditions such as family income, problems during childbirth and health during the child’s first 3 years of life are factors associated with MIH. Conclusion: Problems during birth, hypocalcemia in premature newborns, use of antibiotics, environmental factors, high fever during enamel formation, respiratory diseases in early childhood, in addition to genetic factors are associated with MIH.
