History

The ReMA – Audiotactile Musicology Journal is an international scholarly journal based at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) and coordinated by the Center for Studies in Music and Audiotactile Musicology (eMMA), in cooperation with the CRIJMA – Centre de Recherche International sur le Jazz et les Musiques Audiotactiles (Sorbonne/IReMus/CNRS, France) and FORMMA – Formazione e Ricerca per la Musica delle Musiche Audiotattili (Italy). The journal is part of a broader network of academic initiatives dedicated to the development and dissemination of the Theory of Audiotactile Musics and its implications for musicology, music analysis, philosophy of music, music pedagogy, and performance studies.

The origins of this editorial project are closely linked to the internationalization of audiotactile studies initiated through the establishment of CRIJMA, a research laboratory affiliated with IReMus/CNRS/Sorbonne and created in 2016 to foster scholarly cooperation among researchers in France, Italy, and Brazil. Within this framework, the Revue d'Études du Jazz et des Musiques Audiotactiles (RJMA) was founded as a multilingual journal published in French, English, Portuguese, and Italian, dedicated to the international circulation of research related to the audiotactile paradigm and to the diverse musical traditions encompassed by it.

Between 2018 and 2025, RJMA published four volumes devoted to major themes in Audiotactile Musicology, including musical epistemology, jazz studies, improvisation, phonography, creativity, music education, aesthetics, and performance. Throughout this period, the journal brought together contributions originating from a wide range of academic and cultural contexts, establishing itself as a forum for international scholarly dialogue on audiotactile modes of musical production, transmission, and reception.

Concurrently, the establishment of the Center for Studies in Music and Audiotactile Musicology (eMMA) at the Federal University of Espírito Santo contributed to the institutional development of Audiotactile Musicology in Brazil through research, academic training, and international cooperation. Integrated into national and international research networks, the center has played an active role in the organization of research projects, academic events, scholarly publications, and scientific dissemination initiatives in the field.

Within this context, ReMA emerges as the editorial continuation of the experience developed through RJMA, while preserving its international, multilingual, and interdisciplinary orientation. At the same time, it expands its thematic scope in order to accommodate musicological research conducted in dialogue with the audiotactile approach, encompassing a wide range of repertoires, musical practices, analytical perspectives, and scholarly traditions.
