Abstract

Arising in a Eurocentric point of view to become a pressing issue worldwide, the concept of nation in social thought is very recent, in addition to being very broad and difficult to define. In Brazil, since at least its Independence in 1822, with greater depth in the Imperial Period, with the Romanticism movement, and in the Vargas Era, the lack of a nation has been one of the relevant agenda of the social thought. By reviewing literature and historical data, this paper examines how Brazilian social thought over the centuries dealt with the “national issue”, the artificial concepts with “top-down” imposition, its consequent lack of completion and the effects of this incompleteness in the daily social and political life of Brasil.
