Contributions of the integration of NBR ISO 14001 and NBR ISO 50001 standards to organizational environmental performance

Abstract

Context: The integration between NBR ISO 14001 and NBR ISO 50001 can strengthen environmental management by addressing energy use and consumption as a relevant environmental aspect. Objective: To analyze the contributions of the integrated application of these standards to the improvement of organizational environmental performance. Method: A literature review and a survey were conducted, with a questionnaire applied to organizations certified under ISO 14001 and, in some cases, also under ISO 50001, located in the Southeast Region of Brazil. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Results: ISO 50001 was found to provide a more structured and data-driven approach, with the definition of indicators, targets, and energy baselines, while ISO 14001 presents opportunities for improvement in environmental performance monitoring. Weaknesses were also identified in the definition of environmental aspects, indicators, and targets in some of the organizations analyzed. Conclusion: The integration of the standards contributes to improving the control of environmental aspects, especially energy-related ones, fostering continuous improvement in organizational environmental performance.
