Sustainable agricultural practice and environmental development of Goiás

Abstract

Considering the strategic role of the state of Goiás in the Brazilian economy and its impact on environmental development, this research assesses agricultural sustainability in the state by examining the formation of clusters. Using the hierarchical clustering methodology, municipalities were grouped according to the following variables: legal reserve area, permanent preservation, water deficit, pasture conditions, organic production, and sustainable agricultural practices. The application of the Random Forest algorithm identified sustainable farming practices as the most impactful variable in differentiating the groups. The results indicate that only 12% of municipalities in Goiás have high rates of rural properties adopting sustainable agricultural practices, with family farming being a determining factor for this adherence. Regional disparities show that while some areas, such as Catalão, Jataí, and Rio Verde, exhibit greater integration with sustainable production chains, other regions face structural barriers that hinder the adoption of these practices. Considering these findings, the research underscores the importance of targeted public policies, such as PRONAF, CAF, and incentive programs, in integrating practices like family farming, which can amplify the impact of sustainable practices in the state. The implementation of strategies that incorporate conventional management with sustainable techniques is crucial to enhancing agricultural sustainability and promoting a balance between economic development and environmental preservation.

    Holds a Bachelor's degree in Science with a specialization in Mathematics from the University of Rio Verde (2006), a Master's degree in Applied Statistics and Biometrics from the Federal University of Viçosa (2008), and a PhD in Applied Statistics and Biometrics from the Federal University of Viçosa (2018). Currently a professor at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Goiás. Has experience in the area of ​​Probability and Statistics, with an emphasis on Geostatistics, mainly working on the following topics: pattern recognition, classification methods, and geostatistics.

  2. Sílvia Ferreira Marques Salustiano, Instituto Federal Goiano (IF Goiano)

    Full Professor at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Goiás, Rio Verde Campus, GO. Permanent Faculty Member of the Postgraduate Program in Administration (PPGADM) and Member of the Academia Network of the Institute of Business Citizenship (ICE). Holds a Post-Doctorate in Economics from ESALQ/USP (2022-2024) and from the School of Economics and Management of the University of Minho, Portugal (2017). PhD in Economics from the Catholic University of Brasília (2014), Master's degree in Environmental Sciences from the Federal University of Tocantins (2008). Specialist in Agribusiness Management (UFT, 2007) and in Human Resources Management and Development (UNITRI, 2003), in addition to a degree in Economics from the Triângulo University Center (2000). Since March 2023, she has served as Entrepreneurship Coordinator at the Center of Excellence in Exponential Agriculture (CEAGRE). It develops teaching, research and outreach activities focused on Economics, with an emphasis on the Economic Valuation of the Environment and Subsidies in Agribusiness.

Currently a professor at the Federal Institute of Goiás - Rio Verde Campus, in the areas of Agribusiness Management, Geography and Rural Extension. Permanent Faculty Member of the stricto sensu Graduate Programs in Professional and Technological Education (IFGoiano - Ceres Campus) and Professional Administration (IFGoiano - Rio Verde Campus), and the lato sensu Graduate Program in Teacher Training and Educational Practices (IFGoiano - Rio Verde Campus). Member of the Brazilian Society of Economics, Administration and Rural Sociology (SOBER). His main areas of expertise include: Rural Extension and Rural Development Actions, Agroecology, Education in/of the Countryside, Agribusiness Management, Family Farming, Sustainability Indicators, and Professional and Technological Education (EPT).

  5. Omar Ouro-Salim, Instituto Federal Goiano (IF Goiano)

    I hold a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Brasília University (UnB) and a Master's degree in Organizational Management conferred by the Federal University of Goiás (UFG). My academic journey encompasses a bachelor's degree in Management and Marketing from the Université de Lomé, which I completed in 2013. My areas of interest span Food Waste, Food Supply Chains, Circular Economy, Sustainable Development, and Cooperatives. My educational path also extends to practical skills, as I gained proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel tools during my tenure at the Université de Lomé between 2014 and 2015. Furthermore, I dedicated two years to teaching and delivering lessons in mathematics and physics at a private school in Lomé's coastal region from 2013 to 2014. Among my achievements is the successful achievement of the DALF C2 diploma in French, awarded by the Alliance Française of Lomé in 2014. Currently, I am honored to serve as an assistant at the Embassy of the Republic of Guinea in Brazil, where I persistently contribute my knowledge and skills to advance the bilateral relations between the two nations. I am an associate member of the Quebec Circular Economy Research Network (RRECQ) and the Advanced Studies and Research Group in Supply Chain Management (GEALOGS).
