The conservative modernization of agriculture and the pathogenic transformation of space: Poisoning and death by use of pesticides in Espírito Santo

Abstract

The present article aims to expose the essential relationship between the conservative modernization of agriculture, its system of techniques and the pathogenic transformation of space. Therefore, we seek to reveal the nuances of conservative modernization in Brazil and Espírito Santo, through the analytical categories of systems object and systems of action. From this perspective, we present an overview of the poisoning and death resulting from the use of pesticides, from 2007 to 2014, en Espírito Santo. For this, we used the spatialization of the data, made available by the official information systems, in order to construct a set of maps and graphs that evidenced the pathogenic content of the space.

Paulo Cesar Aguiar Junior

Possui graduação em Geografia pela Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (2013), mestrado em Saúde Pública pela ENSP-Fiocruz. Atualmente atua como educador na rede estadual de ensino do estado do Espírito Santo ministrando aulas de geografia. Tem experiência em estudos e trabalhos referentes à questão agrária, saúde pública e coletiva, vigilância em saúde, saúde ambiental, agroecologia, conflitos no campo com destaque para o uso de agrotóxicos e seus respectivos danos a saúde e ambiente. Tem atuado em pesquisas sobre agroecologia, movimentos sociais do campo, conflitos agrários e territorialização do capital, sobretudo, envolvendo o uso de agrotóxicos.

Christovam de Castro Barcellos Neto, Instituto de Comunicação e Informação Científica e Tecnológica em Saúde (Icict/Fiocruz)

Graduado em Geografia pela Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), graduado em Engenharia Civil pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), mestre em Ciências Biológicas pela UFRJ e doutor em Geociências pela Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). Atualmente é pesquisador titular do Laboratório de Informação em Saúde do Instituto de Comunicação e Informação Científica e Tecnológica em Saúde (Lis/Icict). Trabalhou como sanitarista das secretarias estaduais de saúde do Rio de Janeiro e Rio Grande do Sul. Atua na pesquisa e ensino de Geografia da Saúde, com ênfase em Vigilância em Saúde, principalmente nos seguintes temas: geoprocessamento, análise espacial, indicadores de saúde e sistemas de informações geográficas.
