Trend and spatial distribution of pregnancy in adolescence in Espírito Santo

Teenage pregnancy profoundly affects the life trajectory of adolescents, representing a challenge for public policies. With the aim of analyzing the trend and spatial distribution of teenage pregnancy from 2005 to 2015 in Espírito Santo, an ecological study was carried out using the number of live births among women aged 10 to 19 years (divided into groups: 10 to 14 and 15 to 19) per year of study and municipality available in the Department of Health Informatics (DATASUS). The incidence was calculated for the state, for the health regions (North, Central, Metropolitan, and South), and for the seventy-eight municipalities that make up the state. Trend analysis was performed by health region and age group, and subsequently, spatial distribution was carried out. Municipalities with the highest average coefficient of teenage pregnancy are mostly concentrated in the northern region of the state. Among 10 to 14-year-olds, the Metropolitan and Southern regions show a significant increasing trend in teenage pregnancy rates over time, while among 15 to 19-year-olds, the Northern region shows a significant decreasing trend in rates. Despite the reduction, the Northern region remained with the highest rates. Spatial analysis revealed a homogeneous cluster of cases especially in the Northern region. In Espírito Santo, the highest rates of teenage pregnancy are in the North region which has the most unfavorable socioeconomic conditions in the state and is also a priority area for interventions aimed at preventing unplanned teenage pregnancies.
