Em seu artigo Dimitris Milonakis realiza uma necessária e pertinente discussão sobre a evolução da teoria econômica dominante, apontando como esta é incapaz de prever, sequer explicar, as crises recorrentes do capitalismo. Em termos práticos, alude às diversas manifestações de satisfação dos principais economistas com o próprio sucesso, e isto durante todo o período neoliberal até as vésperas da crise de 2008. Em termos metodológicos, apresenta a crescente formalização axiomática, decorrente da aproximação destes profissionais, acadêmicos ou não, com ciências em que o elemento social e o processo histórico concreto não fazem parte da evolução e das possibilidades reais de desenvolvimento das relações de produção. Em termos teóricos, citando as crises de 1870, 1930 e 1970, re-coloca as crises econômicas como fenômenos normais e recorrentes ao longo da história do capitalismo.
