Coffee processing is an important economic activity that generates a significant amount of waste, such as the husk. On the other hand, the high consumption and improper disposal of plastics, like disposable cups, also lead to significant environmental pollution problems. The interest in materials of industrial importance derived from renewable raw materials and the reuse of discarded materials is growing due to environmental concerns. The goal of this project, carried out with 2nd-year students at a state school as part of a Junior Scientific Initiation Program (PIC Jr), is the development of cellulose acetate/polystyrene (CA/PS) filtering membranes for water purification. Cellulose acetate was obtained from coffee husk cellulose, and polystyrene was sourced from discarded plastic cups. The results showed that the cellulose extraction methodology effectively reduced the lignin content of the fiber from 33% to 11%, making it possible to obtain cellulose acetate derivatives. The membranes produced from this derivative exhibited a flux of 1.5651 L/m2.h for pure membranes and 0.4017 L/m2.h for membrane AC/PS. The work demonstrated the feasibility of obtaining filtering membranes from coffee husks in a proposal that promotes critical thinking among young students in basic education.
