Lasar Segall (1889–1957), a Jewish artist who led a nomadic, unstable life in widely divergent contexts, continuously expressed himself through what he liked to call his »inner images«. The term refers to ideas, visions and memories which are marked by personal perceptions and thoughts. This study is based on a critical analysis of selected artworks as well as on text documents Segall wrote. In an attempt to find evidence for Segall’s pictorial concept in his oeuvre, it aims at highlighting the importance of the notion of writing in-between-the-worlds for Segall’s artistic production.
