Abstract

This essay by Harun Farocki, written in 1999, presents part of the research developed for his subsequent film Prison Images [Gefängnisbilder, 2000]. Centered on an investigation into American prisons, the author analyzes the content and logic of moving images circumscribed in and about the prison universe. Between instructional films aimed at guards, images from closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, fictional and documentary films set in prisons, the place of prison imagery is seen through a critical lens.
