O céu de verão agora é muitas vezes da cor do açafrão. A fumaça dos incêndios florestais, soprada de centenas de quilômetros de distância, fica presa como redes muito largas entre os edifícios. Edmonton, Alberta, onde moro há quase vinte anos, é uma cidade na orla da Floresta Boreal Canadense. É a maior parte da Taiga, a segunda maior floresta do mundo que se estende pelo Canadá e continua pela Islândia, Noruega, Suécia, Finlândia, Rússia, Mongólia e Japão. No Canadá, ela cobre 270 milhões de hectares entre pradarias planas e a tundra ártica sem árvores. A Floresta Boreal é a terra natal de mais de 600 comunidades indígenas, a maioria das reservas conhecidas de combustíveis fósseis no Canadá, armazena mais de 208 bilhões de toneladas de carbono (11% do total mundial) e, junto com a Floresta Amazônica, é o segundo dos dois grandes pulmões do mundo.
